By law, asylum-seekers can be held for 35 days in a CARA. In reality, the average stay is closer to a year. The Cara is located at the "Residence degli Aranci" (Residence of the Oranges), a small town built to accomodate the families of US soldiers operating at the Naval Air Station of Sigonella 40km away. Since 2011 the "Residence degli Aranci" hosts the Accommodation Center for Asylum Seekers, which has since then hosted more than 12,000 seekers of 47 nationalities and over 200 ethnic groups. The CARA of Mineo includes 404 houses. Each house hosts from 7 to 11 asylum seekers.
