(L-R) Henry, 16, and Christopher, 14, wait at their home farm for their parents, Jesse and Esther Martin, to come back from the Hershey Medical Center, where their little sister Marlene, 2, was hospitalized in the morning because of her Hirschsprung's disease. Jesse Martin, 49, is a Mennonite farmer who believes in self-sufficiency and opposes insurance and government aid. In recent years , Mr. Martin has paid at least $400,000 for care in two nonprofit  hospitals, Lancaster General Hospital and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He is now struggling to pay the remaining $287,000 he owes them. "I want to pay", Jesse Martin says, "but they have to come up with a more decent price. I can't make it. Five of my 11 children suffer from maple syrup, 3 from Hirschsprung's disease, and 2 from SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency)". Genetic disorders particularly affect Amish communities, since most of them descend from the few hundred  German-Swiss settlers who brought the Amish and Mennonite faiths to the United States in the 18th century. Marrying within an Amish community means members share large regions of genetic material, rendering them more likely to suffer from certain diseases. <br />

Italy’s Institute of Services for Agriculture and Food Market, or ISMEA, calculated that olive oil production fell on average by 35 percent from 302,000 tons from 463,000 the previous year.

Cindy Worley grew up using root cellars and she now preserves fresh food produced either at the Joseph Daniel Wilson Memorial Garden in Harlem, or at the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm in Upstate New York, which she is member of. Italy’s Institute of Services for Agriculture and Food Market, or ISMEA, calculated that olive oil production fell on average by 35 percent from 302,000 tons from 463,000 the previous year.

Jesse Martin, 49, is a Mennonite farmer who believes in self-sufficiency and opposes insurance and government aid. In recent years , Mr. Martin has paid at least $400,000 for care in two nonprofit  hospitals, Lancaster General Hospital and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He is now struggling to pay the remaining $287,000 he owes them. "I want to pay", Jesse Martin says, "but they have to come up with a more decent price. I can't make it. Five of my 11 children suffer from maple syrup, 3 from Hirschsprung's disease, and 2 from SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency)". Genetic disorders particularly affect Amish communities, since most of them descend from the few hundred  German-Swiss settlers who brought the Amish and Mennonite faiths to the United States in the 18th century. In 2019 Vito Nicastri, a Sicilian wind farm businessman known as the “king of wind”, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for bankrolling the top mafia fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro. Investigators said Nicastri, who made his name as an alternative energy entrepreneur, had invested money made from criminal activities and had “high-level” contacts in the mafia and “close ties to Matteo Messina Denaro”. According to prosecutors, Nicastri allegedly acted as a middleman between local bosses and corrupt politicians, securing all the permits required to build and deliver hundreds of windfarm turbines to Spanish, Danish and Maltese operators, with profits finding their way back to Denaro.<br />

Described as “the last Mohican of the old mafia”, Matteo Messina Denaro (57) is one of the world’s most wanted fugitives, who has been in hiding since 1993. He was once considered a candidate to be the Sicilian mafia’s boss of bosses after the deaths of Bernardo Provenzano in 2016 and Salvatore Riina in 2017. He was born into the Denaro Family (a well-known Mafia family) in Castelvetrano in the province of Trapani, Sicily. <br />
Matteo Messina Denaro, who infamously claimed: “I filled a cemetery all by myself”, has apparently kept up his luxurious lifestyle, thanks to his several bankrollers who, according to prosecutors, include politicians and businessmen. Investigators have long claimed that the boss, wanted for more than 50 murders, is being shielded by powerful Freemasons in Trapani.
