Last year, the Melis family entered the Guinness Book of World Records for having the highest combined age of any nine living siblings on earth — today more than 825 years. The youngest sibling, Mafalda – the "little one" – is 79 years old.

The Melis siblings were all born in Perdasdefogu to Francesco Melis and Eleonora Mameli, who had a general store. Consolata, 106, is the oldest, then Claudia, 100; Maria, 98; Antonino, 94; Concetta, 92; Adolfo, 90; Vitalio, 87; Fida Vitalia, 81; and Mafalda, the baby at 79. Their descendants now account for about a third of the village.

The World Guinness Record of the largest concentration of centenarians - 0.449 percent per capita - was achieved by the town of Perdasdefogu, in the island of Sardinia, Italy, in April 2022. At the time the record was set, there were 8 centenarians in a population of 1,778.

Sardinia has been identified as one of five regions in the world that have high concentrations of people over 100 years old: a total of 534 people across or 33.6 for every 100,000 inhabitants. But Perdasdefogu is unique because the number of centenarians in a town of its size is 16 times the national average.

Perdasdefogu shot to fame in 2012 when the Melis family, made up of nine brothers and sisters, entered the Guinness World Records as the oldest living siblings on Earth, with a combined age at the time of 818. Trattoria Malinconico, a popular restaurant in the Vomer district of Naples, was opened in 1953 by current owner Marianna Sorrentino’s parents-in-law. At first it was only a bulk wine cellar, but then he began making a few cooked dishes – small plates that were popular with locals, which eventually morphed into larger meals. Still today the trattoria is frequented the neighborhood’s older residents, many of whom have been loyal regulars for years, as well as younger locals and workers, who often stop by for a glass of wine. The menu varies from day to day, and is typically based on traditional Neapolitan recipes. Though some dishes, like meatballs, sausages, and friarielli (rapini, a type of broccoli typical to Naples), are always available.

Genovese sauce is a rich, onion-based pasta sauce from the region of Campania, Italy. Likely introduced to Naples from the northern Italian city of Genoa during the Renaissance, it has since become famous in Campania and forgotten elsewhere.
Genovese sauce is prepared by sautéing either beef, veal or pork in a large number of onions, for at least two but as many as ten hours. Large, cylindrical pasta like rigatoni, ziti or candele are favored because they can hold the rich sauce.

Faina Ryzhikova was born in 1926 in Radoshkovichi, a little village 22 miles northwest from Minsk, Belarus. Back in 1939, this territory belonged to Poland. When the Germans occupied Radoshkovichi, in 1941, they created a ghetto, where Faina and her family lived and worked. In order to escape a planned pogrom by the Germans in 1942, Faina escaped into the forest where she later met the partisans of the brigade “Narodnie Mstiteli” (Avengers of the people), which she joined.

Faina's mother and sisters were killed while trying to escape. Her father survived and joined aina in 1943. Of the 2000 people that lived in the Radoshkovichi ghetto, only 18 survived. She married Vladimir Ryzhikov in 1954 and raised two sons. Faina's husband passed away in 1991, before the family came to the United States.
