KARYES, MOUNT ATHOS, GREECE - 10 MAY 2014: Pilgrims wait for bus transfers in the central square of Karyes, the capital of Mount Athos, Greece, on May 10th 2014. According to the 2001 Greek census, Karyes' population is of 233 inhabitants. Karyes hosts the Holy Community (Iera Koinotita), which consists of 20 monks representing the monasteries of Mount Athos that govern the Holy Mountain.
Mount Athos is a mountain and peninsula in Greece. A World Heritage Site and autonomous polity in the Hellenic Republic, Athos is home to 20 stavropegial Eastern Orthodox monasteries under the direct jurisdiction of the patriarch of Constantinople. Greeks commonly refer to Mount Athos as the "Holy Mountain".
