Francis lives at the the CARA (Accommodation Centre for Asylum Seekers) of Mineo, where approximaley 4,000 asylum seekers live. Francis was rescued on a boat carrying 750 asylum seekers from Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Syria and Pakistan on April 9th, 2014, after 11 hours in the Mediterranean Sea. He left Nigeria in 2009, then lived and worked in Libya for 13 months as a mechanic. He left Libya after his safety was theathened and was shot in a leg.
By law, asylum-seekers can be held for 35 days in a CARA. In reality, the average stay is closer to a year.The Cara is located at the "Residence degli Aranci" (Residence of the Oranges), a small town built to accomodate the families of US soldiers operating at the Naval Air Station of Sigonella 40km away. Since 2011 the "Residence degli Aranci" hosts the Accommodation Center for Asylum Seekers, which has since then hosted more than 12,000 seekers of 47 nationalities and over 200 ethnic groups. The CARA of Mineo includes 404 houses. Each housts from 7 to 11 asylum seekers.
