Mario Monti has expressed “serious concerns” that Sicily’s regional government is heading towards default and has asked its governor – who is under investigation for suspected links to the Mafia – to confirm his intention to resign. Sicily was among 23 Italian “sub-sovereign entities” downgraded by Moody’s rating agency on Monday, a development that has raised the possibility of a chain of defaults at the local level unless the central government intervenes. Sicily’s debt was €5.3bn at the end of 2011, according to Bloomberg. Mr Monti, Italy’s technocratic prime minister, indicated in his statement on Tuesday that Rome would take action to bail out Sicily’s debts. Sicily has long been identified as one of the most poorly managed of Italy’s regions, with the public sector accounting for the bulk of the island’s economy and jobs. Commentators call it “Italy’s Greece”.

 • Tunis, Tunisia - 19 December, 2011: Lina Ben Mhenni, 28, cyber activist author of the popular blog "A Tunisian Girl" and teaching assistant of linguistics at the University of Tunis, is photographed in Tunis, Tunisia, on December 19, 2011. Her influential blog, which was censored under Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s rule, was one of the most revealing and scathing criticisms of Tunisian society, focusing particularly on issues like women’s rights and press freedom. When unrest began in Tunisia in January 2011, Ben Mhenni began traveling across the country to take photos and video footage of both the protests and people she says were killed in the ensuing government crackdowns. She visited local hospitals and took pictures of those injured or killed by the police. She risked her safety as one of the only Tunisians to criticize the repressive government openly on international broadcasts before the “Jasmine Revolution" began. Described as one of the bravest bloggers in the world, much of Ben Mhenni’s writing focuses on freedom of expression and the rights of women and students.
• ROME, ITALY - 30 MARCH 2015: Giuseppe Basso, CEO of Cinecittà Studios, is here during an interview in Cinecittà, Rome, Italy, on March 30th 2015.

Italy instated a special 25% tax credit for film productions in 2010. The industry then lobbied to remove the credit’s cap, and last July, Italy lifted its tax credit limit from €5 million per movie to €10 million per company per year.

Cinecittà, a large film studio in Rome, is considered the hub of Italian cinema. The studios were founded in 1937 by Benito Mussolini as part of a scheme to revive the Italian film industry. In the 1950s, the number of international productions being made here led to Rome being dubbed as the "Hollywood on the Tiber". In the 1950s, Cinecittà was the filming location for several large American film productions like Ben-Hur, and then became the studio most closely associated with Federico Fellini.
After a period of near-bankruptcy, the Italian Government privatized Cinecittà in 1997, selling an 80% stake.

Currently Ben-Hur and Zoolander 2 are booked into Cinecittà Studios.

In 1973 Cuticchio opened the Teatro dei Pupi Santa Rosalia in Palermo, and in 1977 he founded the Associazione Figli d’Arte Cuticchio, with the intention of safeguarding and handing down the artistic tradition of the Opera dei Pupi. In 2015 his collection of Sicilian Pupi which includes 19th and 20th Century marionettes, was purchased by the Fondazione Sicilia, and is now on show at the Palazzo Branciforte in Palermo. In 2001 UNESCO entered the Opera dei Pupi in the list of Proclaimed Masterpieces, and in 2008 it inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
