CAIVANO, ITALY - 30 AUGUST 2023: Bruno Mazza (42), president of the “A childhood to live” association, which runs the only afternoon activities for local children, poses for a portrait at the Parco Verde, a social housing project in Caivano, adjacent to the homes of the girls who were repeatedly raped, in Caivano, Italy, on August 30th 2023.

Two young girls were repeatedly sexually abused by a gang of their peers, all residents in the town of Caivano, on the outskirts of Naples. The violence on the two girls, cousins just 10 and 12 years old, took place over the course of many months. In this working-class town of 37,800, the two young cousins grew up in public housing in the Rione I.A.C.P. district, in what neighbors described as troubled families. They also didn’t attend school, which in Italy is compulsory until the age of 16.
